MAPPING MEMORIES
Many residents were keen to tell us about their memories of Stretford, picking out the best (and the worst) parts of its past and using these for a basis for what to design its future on. Many missed the old Kings Street and many referred to a variety of long gone evening entertainment facilities such as night clubs and curry take aways.

There used to be a proper dodgy Chinese chippy, found an Alsatians head in the freezer there. Locals were complaining about their cats going missing, the meat did taste funny there’
‘I remember the Mayday parade, all the locals used to crowd onto the streets for the parade, all different religions parading together, we don’t have anything like that nowadays, no big events to look forward to’
I used to sit and watch the boats go by, they used to take grain to the Kellogg’s factory’

You used to be able to get a good quality pair of gentleman’s shoes, now I have to travel into Sale, I just wonder what I’ll do when I can’t get around so easily’
There’s nowhere to get what you need, we used to have all the shops, ironmongers and all’
I used to DJ in the Sands, 30 years I was there, played anything from reggae, 90’s house and rap. We used to pile into the curry shop after closing, never paid for a curry there!’
Longford hall was a beautiful building, should have been listed like the town hall, such a waste’
I used to work for the canal company helping transport cotton on the boats, doesn’t that make me sound old!’
There used to be a Corona Pop factory there, bet you don’t drink pop now do you’
From these conversations common words began to appear which were recorded with word detection software.

The adjacent diagram shows the overall most common words.

RECORDING CONVERSATIONS
By splitting data up via age different words begin to appear.

It was interesting to see that the older people got the more they asked for specific things such as shops whereas younger participants only knew that they ‘wanted’ something. This may be due to an increased knowledge of what was needed or due to younger residents openness mindedness to unspecific options.
